Where and how to enter tax information

Note: certain tax items will only appear in the navigation window once the appropriate tick selections are made in the Interview setup page.

How do I enter...

Q: How do I enter my T4, T4A, T4E, T5, etc. slips?

A: Information slips are entered under the following items in the navigation window:

Q: How do I enter a second T4 (or T5, etc.)?

A: To add another T4 slip, select T4 and employment income in the navigation window at the left of the screen, then click Add to add your next T4.

The same method is used for other information: select the desired item in the navigation window and add another instance.

Q: How do I enter information on a specific line number?

A: Select from the following line number ranges to get specific line number information.

Q: How do I enter carrying charges(safety deposit box, management fees) and interest paid to invest ?

A: Enter your expenses under Interest/investment income > Carrying charges or interest expenses.

Q: How do I claim the amounts transferred from my spouse?

A: Once the tax information for your spouse is entered, the software will automatically calculate the optimized amounts to transfer. You can control the transfer of these amounts under Controls > Transferable deductions and credits but this may cause you and your spouse to pay more tax as the results may not be optimal.

Q: How do I enter my public transit passes amount?

A: Enter the amounts under Other deductions and credits > Amount for cost of public transit passes .

Q: How do I enter split pension income?

A: The program automatically splits pension income if you are processing your spouse's return together with your own. To control the split select: Pension income, T4A, split pension > Split pension income.

Q: How do I enter my employment insurance benefits?

A: You should have received an information slip titled T4E - Employment insurance benefits. Enter the amounts under T4 and employment income > T4E - Employment insurance benefits.

Q: How do I report employment income earned outside my province of residence?

A: Enter your employment income in the usual way using the T4 slip input page found under T4 and employment income > T4 income.

If you have foreign employment income, enter it under Foreign income and property > Foreign employment income. (This requires the proper selection to be ticked in the Interview setup).

Q: How do I enter interest from income tax refunds?

A: From the navigation window, select Interest/investment income >Interest income not on information slips.

Q: How do I enter charitable donations?

A: Enter charitable donations under Donations/political contributions > Canadian charitable donations. This requires the proper selection to be ticked in the Interview setup).

Q: How do I claim child care expenses?

A: Enter the child care expenses by selecting Child care in the file of the dependent child. The deduction is usually granted to the lower income earner.

Q: How do I claim the amount for an eligible dependant?

A: If you are single, the software will automatically select the best dependant to use for purposes of the amount for an eligible dependant. If you wish, however, you may force the software to use the dependant of your choice. To do so, in the dependant's file, answer Yes to the question Claim this dependant as the eligible dependant?

If you have a spouse or common-law partner, you can claim the amount for an eligible dependant if your marital status changed during the year or if you separated and reconciled during the year. In the file of the family head:

  1. Go to the Identification page and answer Yes to the question Did your marital status change in 2009?
  2. Save this page, then click the new item Marital status change that appears in the navigation window.
  3. Select the applicable type of status change (note that one of the items is Separation then reconciliation in the same year).
  4. Answer Yes to the question Do you wish to claim the federal amount for an eligible dependant?

Q: How do I enter interest paid on student loans?

A: From the navigation window on the left, select Tuition and education > Interest paid on your student loans. (This requires the proper selection to be ticked in the Interview setup except for dependants.)

Q: How do I transfer my dependant's tuition fees?

A: For tuition and education amounts entered in your dependant's file, the transfer of any unused amount is done automatically by the program. In the dependant's file, you can control whether the unused amounts are transferred to the family head or the spouse, or carried forward to be used in future years. You can also limit the amount being transferred. By default, the program will transfer unused tuition amounts to the parent who can use them in the most optimal manner.

If your dependant's information is not being processed along with your own tax return (i.e. not entered in the program as a member of your family), then you must indicate the amount to be transferred from this dependant:

  1. In your own file, go to the Interview setup page, tick Tuition and education expenses, and save.
  2. In the navigation window, select Tuition and education expenses.
  3. Click Tuition and education amount transferred from a child....
  4. Enter the amount to transfer from this dependant.

The program will still transfer any unused amounts from dependants whose information is processed along with your own tax return, and it will then add the amount you entered for dependants not processed.

Q: How do I transfer my tuition and education amount to a parent who is not using the program?

A: To transfer the tuition and education amount:

Q: How do I enter support payments?

A: To report the support payments you paid:

  1. Go to the Interview setup page, tick Alimony or support payments made, and save.
  2. In the navigation window, select Child support/alimony.
  3. Click Alimony or support payment made.

Q: How do I enter my provincial taxes and tax credits?

A: Your provincial taxes are calculated automatically by the program based on the federal tax information that you provide during the interview. To claim specific provincial tax credits, select (Your province) tax and credits in the QuikClik Navigator.

Q: How do I claim professional or union dues?

A: If the amount is on a T4 slip, enter it under T4 and employment income > T4 > Box 44. Otherwise:

  1. Go to the Interview setup page.
  2. Tick Union or professional dues not on T4 slips and save.
  3. In the navigation window, select Union/professional dues.

Q: How do I enter repayments to my Home Buyers' Plan?

A:

  • From the navigation window on the left, select RRSP's, other plans > Contributions to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan(RRSP).
  • Enter your RRSP limit and your RRSP contribution (which should be at least the same as your repayment)
  • Click "Next"
  • Select Participation in a RRSP's home buyers' plan
  • Enter the required repayment and the amount of your repayment.

    Q: Where do I enter my Labour Sponsored Investment fund(LSIF) to receive the Federal and Provincial credit?

    A:

  • In the navigation window, select Provincial Credits > Labour-sponsored investment tax credit
  • Enter the cost of shares in the applicable boxes from your tax slip
  • Select Yes for the question Do you wish to claim the federal labour fund credit (line 413) as well?

    This will claim the Federal and Provincial LSIF credit on your income tax return.

    Q: Where do I enter my Ontario Research-Oriented Labour-Sponsored Investment Fund(LSIF)?

    A:

  • In the navigation window, select Provincial Credits > Labour-sponsored investment tax credit
  • enter the amounts from the slip as relevant for:
  • Enter the amounts again for ROIF (research oriented investment fund):
  • Select YES for the question Do you wish to claim the federal labour fund credit (line 413) as well?
  • This will claim the 15% Ontario Labour-sponsored credit, the 5% Research Oriented credit, and the 15% for the Federal LSIF on your income tax return.

    Q: Where do I enter my FTQ RRSP contributions?

    A:

  • In the navigation window, select Other Information slips > RL-10 - Quebec labour-sponsored tax credit
  • Then, to the question Are these FTQ shares eligible for the RRSP deduction? specify
      - Contribution to your own RRSP or
      - Contributions made to your spouse's RRSP
    depending on the situation.
  • Enter the shares acquired in 2009 and during the first 60 days in the appropriate boxes.
  • Fill in the other information as required.

    Be sure to enter your RRSP deduction limit under RRSP's, other plans > Contributions to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan(RRSP). Do not claim the FTQ contributions in the RRSP section as well or the amount will be doubled.

    Q: How do I pay CPP/QPP contributions on self-employment income and other optional earnings?

    A: If you wish to pay CPP/QPP contributions on optional income, select Controls > Do you wish to make additional CPP(QPP) contributions on optional income? and answer Yes. The software will then calculate CPP/QPP contributions including optional income (e.g. tips).

    Note that the program will not handle a situation where a taxpayer received multiple T4 slips and wishes to pay additional CPP/QPP contributions on the underdeducted amount.

    Q: How do I enter my capital gain or capital loss from sale of stock or mutual fund?

    A:

  • Go to the Interview setup page, tick Capital Gain or losses, and save.
  • In the navigation window, select Capital Gains and ABIL.
  • in the new page that is displayed select Stock and other non depreciable property
  • Enter the complete details of the transaction (the proceed, the ACB, etc.) that caused the capital gain or loss.

    The program will calculate the capital gain or loss that results.

    Q: How do I enter my capital gain deduction?

    A: You can only claim a capital gain deduction on the sale of qualified small business corporation shares, qualified farm property or qualified fishing property. For these type of gains the program will automatically calculate the capital gain deduction. Capital gains are entered by clicking Capital gains in the navigation window, then selecting the applicable type of capital gain.

    If you had capital gain deductions in previous years, you should enter them under Capital gains & ABIL > Capital gains and capital gain deductions in other years .

    To limit the capital gain deduction used enter an amount for Limit to the capital gains exemption claimed near the bottom of the capital gains page (only for farming, fishing or small business).

    Q: How do I enter pension income?

    Q: How do I claim the pension income tax credit?

    A: This amount is calculated automatically by the program from the pension income information that you enter.

    Q: How do I enter social assistance benefits?

    A: You should have received a T5007 information slip. Select Social assistance and worker's compensation then enter the amount in box 11 (Quebec RL-5 box A).

    If you received US social security benefits, go to Foreign income and property > Foreign pension income and select United States social security benefits as the type of foreign pension income. (This requires the proper selection to be ticked in the Interview setup.)

    Q: How do I report the benefits I repaid to the government?

    A: From the navigation window on the left, select Repaid amounts.

    Q: How do I enter Quebec RL-24 information?

    A: Enter the RL-24 child care information by selecting Child care in the file of the dependent child.
